About
Black, queer-identified individuals have often gone overlooked, discounted, or
erased in regards to their contributions to American society and the world. From
Bayard Rustin, Barbara Jordan to George Washington Carver and, of course, Pauli
Murray. America would not exist as it does today without the life's work of these
black and queer individuals. Yet, most of their stories go untold; their
contributions unacknowledged; and their full humanity disregarded and
uncelebrated.
Each year, beginning in 2023, The Pauli Murray Awards: Black LGBTQ+ 40 Under 40
Honors will honor 40 black, LGBTQ+ individuals under the age of 40 who are doing
amazing work in their respective fields/spheres of influence. The Pauli Murray
Awards serves as a mechanism to recognize these amazing individuals while
they do noteworthy work in their communities in the prime of their lives and to
help end the erasure of black, queer folk from their rightful places in the telling of
our collective history as a country.
The 2023 Pauli Murray Awards: Black LGBTQ+ 40 Under 40 Honors will take place in
New York City on June 21, 2023 as the unofficial kick off to NYC Pride Weekend
2023.
